The pool is the hole. The backyard is everything around it.
A typical 16 by 32 foot pool sits inside roughly 600 square feet of deck. You spend almost no time in the shell and almost all of it on the surface around it, and that surface is most of what you see from the house. It is also the part most often treated as an afterthought, poured as a plain grey apron and left there.
We work on that part: decking, coping, water features, and the drainage and grading that keep it all sitting still. Whether the pool went in last month or fifteen years ago.

The expansion joint decides everything
A pool shell and a pool deck are two separate structures sitting next to each other in soil that swells and shrinks all year. They do not move together, and they are not supposed to. The joint between them is the only thing absorbing that difference.
- A failed joint lifts the coping. The deck pushes in, the coping rises or cracks, and the repair runs about $50 to $100 per linear foot. Far more than maintaining the joint would have cost.
- Water has to leave the deck, not the pool. The deck slopes away from the water. If it slopes back, every rain carries dirt and debris straight into the pool and into the equipment.
- Clay under a deck behaves like clay everywhere else. Base preparation and compaction matter here for the same reason they matter under a paver patio, and the pool makes the consequences more visible.
- Saltwater eats concrete and rebar. A stronger mix, epoxy coated steel and the right sealer add a few hundred up to about $1,300, and cost far more than that to retrofit.
- Dark decking gets brutal in July. Color choice is a comfort decision, not just a style one. Cool deck overlays exist for exactly this.
- Equipment and drains get designed around, not into. Skimmer lids, cleanouts and deck drains should land on a joint or a pattern line, not in the middle of a field of stamped concrete.
Soil injection, treating the clay instead of fighting it
Everything on this page comes back to the same thing. North Texas clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries, and it does that every single year. A pool is a rigid structure sitting in the middle of it, tied to underground plumbing that does not flex. That is why shells crack, why lines develop leaks nobody can find, and why decks and coping separate.
Soil injection changes the soil rather than bracing against it. A stabilizing solution is pumped into the ground on a grid, down into the active zone where the moisture swing actually happens, generally somewhere around 7 to 15 feet. The chemistry works by ion exchange: the ions on the clay surface that attract and hold water get replaced, so the clay loses much of its appetite to swell in the first place. It is a chemical change to the soil, not a coating or a temporary treatment.
- It happens before the dig, not after a problem. This is preventive work. Once a shell has cracked or a line is leaking under a finished deck, the cheap window has closed.
- It protects the plumbing as much as the shell. Shifting ground puts steady pressure on buried PVC, and those leaks are the expensive kind because you cannot see where they are.
- It is cheaper than the structural alternative. The other way to deal with bad soil is deep support like helical piers. Both have their place, and treating the soil first is usually the lower cost path.
- It is the part of the bid you cannot see. Which is exactly why most bids leave it out, and why one bid comes in lower than another for what looks like the same pool.
If you are comparing pool bids, ask each one what they are doing about the soil. The answer separates the bids faster than anything else on the page, and it is the difference that shows up in year three rather than on installation day.
Water features and the yard around the pool
- Stacked boulder waterfalls and spillovers. Real stone set so it looks like it was always there, with the plumbing and the sound of the water both planned rather than discovered afterward.
- Raised stone beds and seat walls. They frame the deck, hold planting, and give people somewhere to sit that is not a chair you have to drag out.
- Turf right up to the deck. No mud tracked into the water and nothing to mow around the edges. See artificial turf.
- Drainage for the whole yard, not just the deck. A pool concentrates a lot of hard surface in one place, which has to go somewhere. See yard drainage.
- Existing pools welcome. Resurfacing tired decking and adding proper coping is usually the cheapest large improvement a pool owner can make.
